Encounter: Miami-Dade Deputy Devin Jaramillo’s Life Cut Short in Sudden Altercation

Miami, Florida — The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office is grieving the loss of Deputy Devin Jaramillo, who was fatally shot while responding to an accident on Friday. Authorities have identified 21-year-old Steven David Rustrian as the suspect involved in the tragic incident.

According to the sheriff’s office, Jaramillo arrived at the scene of a crash near Kendall just before 4 p.m. When he engaged with Rustrian, a verbal confrontation erupted. This dispute escalated into a physical altercation, during which Rustrian allegedly seized Jaramillo’s service weapon, fatally shooting him before taking his own life.

In the aftermath, passersby called for help, leading to deputies administering first aid until paramedics transported Jaramillo to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries there, prompting an outpouring of condolences from the community.

Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz expressed her deep sorrow over the incident, describing Jaramillo not only as a law enforcement officer but also as a cherished son and a dedicated public servant. He graduated from the police academy in May 2024, and Cordero-Stutz highlighted the noble choice he made to serve his community.

“What happened to our deputy was unacceptable,” she stated. “We must find a way to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.” Sheriff Stutz reminded the community that behind the badge, deputies are human beings who face danger every day in the line of duty.

The sheriff’s office has clarified that another person initially detained during the investigation has since been released without facing any charges. Investigators continue to assess the details surrounding the incident.

In a show of solidarity, hundreds of first responders gathered outside the hospital to honor Jaramillo’s memory. An emotional motorcade later escorted him to the medical examiner’s office, where the community continues to mourn the loss of a hero.

On Saturday, the solemn procession for Jaramillo continued as he was taken from the medical examiner’s office to a funeral home. As of now, details regarding any memorial services remain undisclosed.

In the wake of this tragedy, the Miami-Dade community is urged to support law enforcement, holding them in their thoughts and prayers during this incredibly challenging time. The sheriff’s office pledged to uphold its commitment to public safety despite the heartache felt by the loss of one of its own.
