Newcastle, United Kingdom – A Gateshead man has been sentenced to over nine years in prison following a violent assault that led to the death of his girlfriend’s brother. The tragic incident unfolded after an evening of socializing turned deadly.
Pearse Kavanagh, 47, was accompanied by his then-girlfriend, Sarah McQueeney, and her brother, Philip McQueeney, at a South Shields residence on July 19, 2022. What began as a gathering among acquaintances escalated into violence when Kavanagh attacked Sarah and then Philip, after he intervened.
The assault was severe, leaving Philip McQueeney, 40, with critical internal injuries. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to a cardiac arrest related to the internal bleeding less than three hours later, according to the medical examiner’s report.
Authorities who responded to the emergency call discovered Philip in a grievous condition at the Rowan Drive home. His sister, Sarah, also exhibited signs of physical assault. Initially, Kavanagh was arrested for the assault on Sarah, but following Philip’s death, charges were upgraded to manslaughter.
Despite his denial of the manslaughter charge, claiming self-defense, a Newcastle Crown Court jury convicted Kavanagh after a detailed 10-day trial. His sentencing occurred on February 21, 2025, where he received nine and a half years for manslaughter and an additional 10 months for assault causing actual bodily harm.
Detective Inspector Simon Drenon, the senior officer on the case, spoke about the devastating impact of the incident. He expressed his condolences to the victim’s family, emphasizing that no legal outcome could undo the events that night. The detective praised the victim’s family for their grace through the legal process and expressed hope that the sentencing might deliver some consolation.
