Milwaukee, Wis. — The family of Latroy Harris, a 48-year-old man who was killed by gunfire last month, is advocating for a community initiative aimed at curbing gun violence. The tragic incident occurred shortly after midnight on December 15, when Harris and another man were shot near 74th Street and Villard Avenue. The second victim survived, but Harris succumbed to his injuries in a local hospital.
Harris’ brother, Monte Mabra, expressed his devastation over the violent nature of the attack, noting that Harris was shot multiple times. “It’s hard to comprehend that someone could inflict such harm,” he stated. The family gathered for a memorial where they shared fond memories and articulated their grief over losing a beloved member.
At the memorial service, Harris’ nephew, Artajia Rich, reflected on the impact of his uncle’s presence in their lives, saying, “You don’t expect to lose someone so integral to your family.” He described Harris as a protector whose absence is profoundly felt.
In response to this tragic loss, Mabra has launched the “I Will Not Die to Gun Violence” initiative in honor of his brother. This program aims to provide a 20-week educational course targeting youth and adults linked to gun violence incidents. The curriculum will focus on raising awareness about the consequences of gun violence, challenging negative social norms, and equipping participants with conflict resolution skills.
Mabra emphasized the urgency of the initiative, stating, “We can’t allow the shooter to win. We need to keep Latroy’s memory alive through positive change.” The effort seeks to empower community members to take action against the rising tide of gun violence.
While this initiative is in its early stages, Mabra hopes to collaborate with local authorities and organizations to expand its reach. He believes that education and community engagement are vital to addressing the gun violence crisis in Milwaukee. “It’s spiraling out of control, and it starts with us teaching our children the value of life,” he asserted.
At the memorial, Mabra spoke warmly of Harris, calling him a foundational figure in their family. “This initiative is a beautiful way to honor him and ensure that his legacy continues,” shared Harris’ sister, Tajawa Rich.
