Scarborough, Ontario — The family of a 67-year-old man who was fatally stabbed in his apartment expressed profound sorrow over the incident, particularly angered by the knowledge that the alleged perpetrator was out on bail. Robert Dawson, a widower, shared his apartment with the suspect, whom he had taken in to help during difficult times.
Jesse Dawson, Robert’s son, was informed of the suspect’s past criminal charges and voiced his dismay, stating, “She absolutely should not have been released on bail.” His comments underscore the family’s distress over the unfolding circumstances.
The suspect, 42-year-old Natasha Maccallum, was apprehended at the scene where Robert was discovered after suffering from severe stab wounds on a Tuesday evening. According to reports, Robert had opened his home to Maccallum, who had been seeking shelter. “He had a big heart and always wanted to assist others,” Jesse remarked, reflecting on his father’s compassionate nature.
Court documents indicate that Maccallum faced a prior assault charge in June, involving a weapon. She had been released on bail without any conditions requiring supervision. Records also reveal that a stipulation of her release required her to maintain distance from the location of her previous assault.
Just days later, Maccallum allegedly violated that condition by returning to the restricted address, where she reportedly threatened another individual. Following this incident, she was once again released under new bail conditions. Jesse expressed frustration over the judicial decisions that allowed Maccallum to remain free, stating that had his father been aware of her history, he wouldn’t have extended his kindness.
The family learned that Robert had confronted Maccallum about the alleged theft of his cellphone, which contained sentimental recordings of his late wife. This confrontation, according to Jesse, led to increased tensions in their living situation. Robert’s wife passed away in November at the age of 65, and the family is now grappling with yet another devastating loss.
