AUSTIN, Texas — Tragedy struck in North Austin last month when a father of nine was fatally shot during a robbery outside a local market. Miguel Mondragon, a familiar face in the community, is remembered fondly by friends and family as they seek justice for his untimely death.
Mondragon was leaving the La Toxika sports bar in the early hours of August 3 when the attack occurred. According to police reports, as he and his friends made their way to the Michoacana Market parking lot shortly after 2:30 a.m., they found themselves surrounded by two vehicles. A group of masked individuals, armed and belligerent, demanded their valuables. Witnesses say Mondragon exited the vehicle and attempted to flee, but he was shot multiple times.
His daughter, Mirella Mondragon, expressed her anguish, questioning the motives behind such a brutal act. “How is somebody capable of doing that and why?” she asked, indicating the deep sense of loss felt by those who knew her father.
Authorities have arrested five individuals in connection with the murder. Among them are 22-year-old Alejandro Hurtado-Reyes, 29-year-old Yanaris Reyes, 17-year-old Antonio González, and two others aged 19. Mirella expressed concern regarding the legal proceedings, revealing that one suspect had been released on bond despite being perceived as a key player in the crime. “It’s just crazy because he was one of the main people there,” she remarked, highlighting the family’s frustration over the judicial system’s treatment of violent offenders.
In the wake of this tragedy, Mondragon’s family is committed to raising awareness about violence in the community. They have initiated a petition addressed to Travis County judges, urging them to impose stricter bail conditions for those charged with homicide. “We’re trying to be that voice for my dad now that he’s not here,” Mirella stated. “It’s sad when individuals in our community inflict harm upon one another.”
