Taylorsville, Miss. — As powerful storms brought multiple tornado warnings to Southern Mississippi, a sizable family in Taylorsville sought refuge in a specially constructed cinder block “safe room” on Saturday. The day was marked by anxiety and vigilance as the storms threatened homes and safety.
The family, which includes multiple generations, has lived in the path of frequent twisters for over two decades, prompting the construction of a reinforced safe room within their residence. Stacy Bryant Hawkins, a 59-year-old resident, described harrowing moments when a likely tornado passed near their area. “There was a sudden calm before the storm intensified. It roared as it crossed over the fields behind our house,” Hawkins recounted.
Apart from the fearsome weather itself, Hawkins expressed particular concern for her family, including her elderly 84-year-old mother reluctant to leave her lifelong home despite the imminent danger. “The safety of my family, especially my aged mother, is my primary concern during such dangerous conditions,” she noted.
Their safe room proved to be a temporary shelter throughout the day, with several family members, including Hawkins’ daughter-in-law, sister-in-law, a toddler, and four dogs seeking shelter there. “Smith County is prone to tornadoes, which is why we equipped our home with a safe room,” Hawkins explained, emphasizing their preparedness.
Tragically, not all family members were spared from the storm’s destruction. Hawkins’ brother-in-law’s house took a direct hit from the tornado. “Their master bedroom now has a tree in it,” Hawkins said, sharing the stark damage. Despite the distress, community and family support has been forthcoming, with many friends and relatives, including her husband and son, rushing to help with the recovery efforts.
