Pontiac, Michigan – A dispute over spitting in a sink led to the tragic shooting death of a 33-year-old Pontiac man on Wednesday. According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, two suspects are currently being held at the Oakland County Jail and could face charges in court as early as Friday.
The victim, Cornelius James Jones, was shot multiple times in an apartment building in the 200 block of Carriage Circle near Auburn Avenue. Deputies responding to a report of shots fired found Jones lying unconscious on the floor of his apartment. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries soon after.
Investigators revealed that an argument over the act of spitting in the sink escalated, leading to the fatal shooting. Witnesses stated that the victim found the act disrespectful and demanded the perpetrator to leave before being shot. Following the gunfire, both suspects fled the scene, prompting a search by authorities.
One of the suspects was swiftly apprehended, and a second man, believed to have known the victim and shot him, was arrested after a lengthy foot chase. During the pursuit, the suspect discarded the gun, which was later recovered by a canine unit along with a boot lost during the chase.
Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard expressed disbelief over such a senseless act leading to loss of life and emphasized the need to hold the individuals involved accountable. He commended the deputies for their swift response to the chaotic and dangerous situation, and the successful apprehension of an armed assailant fleeing under cover of darkness.
