BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The family of Mel Glenn Jr., who was murdered in a robbery on January 5, 2001, is still seeking justice as the 23rd anniversary of his death approaches. His father, Dr. Mel Glenn Sr., continues to hope for closure and answers.
To many, the idea of a loved one being killed and the perpetrator still walking free is incomprehensible. However, for the Glenn family, it is their harsh reality. Jefferson County District Attorney Danny Carr provides a glimmer of hope, stating that there is no time limit for prosecuting a murder case, no matter how much time has passed.
Dr. Glenn recounts the events of that fateful night in 2001 when his son was rear-ended while returning home with dinner for the family. He believes that Mel realized he was going to be robbed, attempted to run back to his car, and was tragically shot in the back. The perpetrators stole his wallet, leaving behind only a small card titled “the things money can’t buy.”
According to Carr, a case is only deemed “cold” if no new information comes to light. He emphasizes that new evidence can lead to prosecution, even if it’s 20 years later, and the guilty party can still be held accountable by a jury.
The reopening of the case under Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond has given Dr. Glenn renewed hope for justice. Despite this, he has publicly forgiven the perpetrators, expressing a desire for them to come forward and face the consequences of their actions.
Dr. Glenn’s mission now is to prevent similar tragedies by teaching young people the importance of non-violence. He uses the legacies of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Pastor Shuttlesworth as symbols of peace to inspire the younger generation.
While Dr. Glenn still carries the pain of his son’s loss every day, he remains steadfast in his prayers for the day when his son’s murder is finally solved.
