Washington D.C. – A troubling surge in assaults against law enforcement officers in the United yet set a concerning record last year. Over 79,000 assaults were reported in 2023, marking the highest figure in a decade, according to new FBI statistics. This escalation aligns with an overall uptick in gun-related injuries among officers.
The recent FBI Insight into Gun Violence and Public Safety also highlighted a subtle decline in active shooter incidents across the United States, contrasting sharply with the rising violence against police. In 2023, 48 active shooter incidents were recorded, a slight decrease from the 50 reported the previous year. Despite this decrease, the severity and frequency of these high-profile attacks remain alarmingly high compared to five years ago, showing a 60% increase from 2019.
Geographically, these shooting incidents spanned 26 states, with California reporting the highest number at eight. These incidents varied in location, taking place in open spaces, places of commerce, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and private residences.
The most chilling incidents of the year included a mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine, at a recreational facility and adjoining bar where 18 individuals lost their lives and 13 were injured. Other devastating attacks occurred in Monterey Park and Alhambra, California, Allen, Texas, Chicago, and Louisville, Kentucky, further underscoring the widespread nature of this violent phenomenon.
Despite the high incidence of such tragic events, there was a significant rate of law enforcement intervention. The FBI reported that 61% of active shooter situations concluded with the arrest of the suspects, while 25% ended in the suspect’s death at the scene.
Firearm use among suspects varied, with handguns being the most common weapon. Of all shooters, 43 used handguns, 16 used rifles, and one chose a shotgun. The consequences of these events were dire: 139 people were wounded and 105 were killed, emphasizing the lethal impact of such assaults.
