Natchez, Miss. — A devastating series of tornadoes wreaked havoc across the Southern United States over the weekend, claiming at least four lives and inflicting severe damage as the system marched from Texas to the Carolinas. Throughout Saturday, the National Weather Service tracked 36 preliminary tornado reports spanning Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. The storm system proceeded eastward, threatening millions more as it neared Alabama and moved into Georgia in the early hours of Sunday.
By Sunday, the violent weather system extended its reach to the eastern Gulf Coast up to the Carolinas, placing over 20 million people under the threat of high winds, hail, and potential tornadoes. Particularly at risk were major Southeastern cities such as Jacksonville, Florida; Savannah, Georgia; and Charleston, South Carolina.
Authorities throughout the affected regions issued tornado watches and severe thunderstorm warnings, alerting residents to the possibility of 70 mph wind gusts and hail through Sunday afternoon. By evening, the severe weather threat was expected to subside, providing some relief to the beleaguered areas.
