HIALEAH, FL – A Florida man is facing a series of felony charges after police say he attacked his former girlfriend with a baseball bat in broad daylight, attempted to force her into a vehicle, and made off with her phone and purse before fleeing the scene.
The incident unfolded Thursday afternoon in a residential area of Hialeah, just two days after the couple had ended their six-month relationship. According to investigators, Alberto Turino Hernandez, 35, confronted his ex-girlfriend as she walked toward her apartment building along West 12th Avenue.
Police reports indicate that Hernandez pulled up in an unfamiliar vehicle, stepped out wielding what appeared to be a black baseball bat, and charged at the woman. Witnesses and victim statements say he struck her multiple times–once across the back, once on her left leg, and again on her right leg, inflicting a laceration. The victim’s urgent cries drew attention, but Hernandez allegedly made threats in Spanish, expressing anger about the breakup.
Despite his repeated efforts to force her into the waiting car, the woman managed to resist, using her legs to brace against the door frame and prevent Hernandez from overpowering her. During the struggle, Hernandez seized her phone by force and snatched her purse before getting back into the vehicle and speeding away in an unknown direction.
Authorities say the violence stemmed from escalating aggression and possessiveness during the tail end of their relationship. Investigators learned that the two had shared an apartment for roughly two months of their half-year relationship, but the woman decided to end things due to Hernandez’s behavior. He had moved out on Tuesday, but Thursday’s attack appeared to be a continuation of unresolved conflict.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene after bystanders called 911. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of her injuries, which included significant contusions and a deep cut.
Law enforcement launched a search for Hernandez and tracked him down within hours, locating him in a box truck not far from the scene. He was taken into custody without incident. During questioning, police say Hernandez confessed to carrying out the assault.
Jail records show Hernandez is now booked at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center and being held without bond. He faces several charges, including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, armed robbery, attempted kidnapping, and tampering with a witness or victim.
Authorities have not disclosed whether additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues. The case highlights the dangers that domestic disputes can pose even after a relationship has ended. No further details on the victim’s recovery have been released.
