TAMPA, FL – A man facing charges in connection with the death of a woman found outside a fast-food restaurant in June now stands accused of second-degree murder. Michael Canty, 54, has been detained in relation to the murder of 48-year-old Dawn Morrison, whose partially decomposed body was discovered near a drive-thru at a Church’s Chicken location.
Hillsborough County authorities revealed that deputies responded to the scene on the morning of June 18 after the body was found beneath mulch outside the restaurant on E. Fletcher Ave. An autopsy concluded Morrison died from a blow to the head, with surveillance footage placing the incident three days before her discovery.
Video from nearby establishments shows Morrison walking with a man behind the restaurant shortly before midnight on June 15. While the cameras did not capture the violent act, audio picked up a woman’s voice, presumably Morrison, pleading with someone to “quit it” and asking for help.
Law enforcement was alerted to the suspect’s movements when the man was seen on video leaving the crime scene, changing his shirt, and disposing of items in a dumpster. Photos from the footage led officers to Canty, who was located a few blocks away from the restaurant two days after the body was discovered.
Canty, identified as wearing distinct pants and boots alongside a New England Patriots bag, initially denied seeing Morrison on the night of the incident. However, he altered his story upon reviewing the surveillance images, claiming he last saw her sitting near the restaurant.
When confronted with evidence, Canty explained the disposal of his shirt was due to it being “dirty.” Nevertheless, the Florida Department of Corrections crime lab matched DNA from Morrison’s blood found on Canty’s clothing, strengthening the case against him.
In addition to murder charges, Canty faces allegations of tampering with evidence for discarding his shirt. His record indicates prior arrests, including failing to report as a sex offender.
Canty remains in custody without bond at Hillsborough County Jail. Investigators continue to emphasize the thorough work carried out to arrest him for the crime. Sheriff Chad Chronister highlighted the diligent efforts of his team, stating their commitment was crucial in holding the suspect accountable.
The case remains active as authorities compile further evidence to solidify the charges against Canty, ensuring that justice is served for Morrison and her loved ones.
