Gary, Indiana, is grappling with the aftermath of a recent shooting that left one man dead and two others injured outside an apartment complex. Four individuals now face charges connected to this violent incident, which occurred on October 17.
Antonio D. Brown, 20, along with Damarion Crossley, Derrick Nicholson, and Samuel Shelhart, has been charged in the death of Jace Smith, 19, who was fatally shot. Authorities have labeled Smith’s death a homicide, as he sustained a single gunshot wound to the head.
According to police reports, the shooting resulted from a prior altercation. Crossley, who allegedly pulled the trigger, claimed he aimed low to hit Smith and two companions in retaliation for a confrontation that had occurred days earlier near Chase Street.
When officers responded to the scene on Clark Road, they found multiple spent .40-caliber shell casings scattered across the area. Witnesses reported seeing a blue sedan pass by as the victims were leaving the apartment, with a masked shooter firing several rounds from the vehicle. One victim later described how he fled after realizing he had been shot in the jaw and struggled to communicate due to his injuries.
The chaotic event left not only human casualties but also endangered others; at least one bullet struck a nearby residence. In the immediate aftermath, police utilized license plate recognition technology to track the suspects’ vehicle. A chase ensued when officers attempted to pull over the sedan, which ultimately ended in a collision with another vehicle.
During the pursuit, Brown, who was driving, and Nicholson exited the car as it came to a stop. Police dogs were then deployed to locate the men, while Crossley remained inside the vehicle for a brief period, flashing a firearm before discarding it.
Crossley insisted that he did not know the victims prior to the shooting, stating they were merely checking the apartment complex on a whim. He mentioned that the group was united in their intent to retaliate, while Shelhart claimed their purpose was to buy marijuana when the gunfire erupted.
Brown and Nicholson also denied any premeditated plans for violence. Brown described their visit as an impulse rather than a malicious act, while Nicholson opted to remain silent during police questioning.
All four have been charged with serious offenses, including murder, attempted murder, aggravated battery, and criminal recklessness. In addition, Nicholson faces charges for resisting law enforcement, and Brown is also charged for similar offenses.
As the investigation continues, authorities urge anyone with information on the case to come forward, highlighting the community’s role in addressing gun violence and seeking justice for victims.
