ATLANTA, Ga. — A tragic incident has left a Georgia community in shock as a mother has been charged with murder following the death of her 11-year-old daughter. Shannen Grimes, 42, faces multiple charges, including two counts of murder, after police discovered the child’s lifeless body alongside her in a Sandy Springs condominium.
Authorities were alerted to a potential crisis when Grimes’ sister called for a welfare check, expressing concern after Grimes allegedly mentioned a suicide attempt. Responding officers found Grimes on the couch, bleeding from a wrist injury, while her daughter, Genesis, was discovered dead in a nearby recliner.
“This is a heartbreaking situation for everyone involved, including the family and the community,” said Sandy Springs Police Sgt. Leon Millholland. The emotional toll on first responders dealing with such distressing circumstances was also noted.
Investigators revealed that Genesis suffered multiple stab wounds to her neck and shoulder. Evidence gathered from the scene included blood stains in various parts of the condo, including the kitchen and bedroom, as well as items believed to have been used to clean up. A box containing blood-soaked clothes was found, along with knives in the kitchen that had traces of blood.
Grimes reportedly told paramedics en route to the hospital that she had stabbed her daughter. Upon her release from medical care, Grimes was taken into custody and is now facing serious charges, including first-degree cruelty to children, possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime, and tampering with evidence.
Authorities confirmed there were no prior incidents reported at the residence, and it appears that no one else was present during the tragic event. The condominium doors were locked, raising questions about the circumstances leading to the child’s death. One of the doors had a chair placed under the knob, indicating a deliberate attempt to secure the area.
As this investigation unfolds, the community is left grappling with the implications of such a devastating crime. Support services are being mobilized to assist those affected, highlighting the need for mental health resources in the wake of such tragic events.
