SANDY SPRINGS, GA – A Georgia woman has been charged with murder after the body of her 11-year-old daughter was discovered propped up in a recliner inside their Sandy Springs condominium this week.
Police arrested Shannen Grimes, 42, and booked her into the Fulton County Jail on Tuesday following her release from the hospital, where she received medical treatment for injuries consistent with an attempted suicide, according to investigators. Grimes now faces multiple charges, including two counts of murder, child cruelty, possession of a weapon during a felony, and tampering with evidence.
Emergency crews arrived at the Laurel Grove condominiums on November 14 after a 911 call from Grimes’ sister, who reported that Grimes had confessed to trying to take her own life. Responding officers entered the apartment with the assistance of the sister and found Grimes on the couch suffering from a wrist wound.
Nearby, police discovered Grimes’ daughter, Genesis, in a recliner with a blanket or towel covering her legs. Genesis was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said that Genesis appeared to have been carefully positioned in the chair, and her body showed multiple puncture wounds to the neck and shoulder region, but with minimal visible bleeding.
Investigators detailed that bloodstains were present throughout various areas of the residence, including evidence that attempts had been made to clean up. Blood-soaked paper towels, a bucket, trash cans, and cleaning materials were scattered across the living room. Police also recovered knives near the kitchen sink that appeared to have traces of blood.
A search of Grimes’ bedroom turned up a box containing blood-stained clothing and bedding. Among the items was a shirt with apparent holes near the neck and shoulders, matching the injuries seen on Genesis.
During the investigation, when officers questioned Grimes regarding her daughter’s death, she allegedly replied, “I happened.” Authorities state that while en route to the hospital, Grimes reportedly confessed to stabbing her daughter in the neck.
Genesis’ official cause of death has not been publicly released. No information was immediately available regarding a potential motive, and it remains unclear what led to the fatal encounter.
Grimes is currently being held in the Fulton County Jail without bond. Court appearances and further court proceedings have yet to be scheduled.
