WHITEMARSH ISLAND, GA – A confrontation at a Walmart in Whitemarsh Island has left an 18-year-old dead and a man facing murder charges, following what authorities say began as a brief dispute over a shopping cart.
Police allege that Delano Middleton, 48, fatally stabbed J.T. Schroeder after the teenager kicked Middleton’s cart while passing him in the store’s exit area on October 23. The incident quickly escalated into a violent altercation that witnesses told authorities ended with Schroeder being stabbed multiple times.
Emergency responders rushed Schroeder to a nearby hospital, but despite medical efforts, he died from his injuries the following day. According to accounts from those close to the victim, he had been kept on life support for several hours before he succumbed to his wounds. His family later confirmed that he was an organ donor.
Authorities said Middleton fled the scene but was apprehended a week later. He was booked into the Chatham County Detention Center on murder charges.
Law enforcement officials stated that interviews with bystanders at the Walmart were critical in helping piece together the sequence of events. Witnesses described a brief exchange between the two men followed by the sudden stabbing, creating panic among shoppers in the busy store.
Records indicate that Middleton had prior arrests for violent offenses and was on probation at the time of the confrontation. His criminal history is being reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.
Family members of Schroeder are struggling to process the loss. They describe him as non-confrontational, stating he was not one to seek out conflict. His father recounted arriving at the store after receiving a panicked phone call, only to find a chaotic scene and evidence of significant blood loss.
Community members in Whitemarsh Island have expressed shock and concern following the incident, which has cast a spotlight on public safety at local businesses.
Middleton remains in custody, and the case will be presented to the district attorney’s office. As of Friday, there has been no word on whether he has obtained legal counsel. Authorities continue to urge anyone with additional information to come forward as the investigation continues.
Schroeder’s family has announced plans to hold a public memorial in the coming days, honoring the teenager’s life and his decision to become an organ donor.
