Panaji, India — Citizens from diverse backgrounds gathered in Margao, Goa, holding candles and demanding accountability for the recent attack on activist Rama Kankonkar. This demonstration came in response to concerns about rising violence and a perceived lack of government action against it.
The protest was organized by AAP MLA Venzy Viegas, who emphasized the need for a transparent investigation into the attack. He asserted that unless authorities disclose the name of the alleged politician behind the incident, a statewide shutdown could be imminent. Viegas urged the public to actively support the cause by closing their businesses in solidarity with Kankonkar.
Participants expressed their frustration over the increasing presence of violence in the state, which they believe is being ignored by local authorities. Tiatrist Wilson Mazarello highlighted the concerning trend of violence, comparing the situation in Goa to that of Delhi and other tumultuous regions in India.
Fr. Eremito Rebelo, also present at the gathering, cautioned against political parties using the protest for their own gain. He called for unity and genuine concerns for safety rather than attempts to leverage public sentiment for political mileage.
Carmo Carneiro, a local resident, voiced broader worries about community safety as many Goans work abroad while leaving loved ones behind. He urged the government to clarify its commitments to maintaining security within the state, stressing the need for an official report on safety measures.
Ulhas Naik, another protester, lamented the low turnout of youth in such critical discussions, echoing sentiments shared by fellow activist Swapnesh Sherlekar. Sherlekar underscored the importance of youth involvement in civic matters, suggesting that greater participation could lead to more substantial change.
As tensions rise over the handling of violence in Goa, these protests reflect a growing discontent among locals who are increasingly frustrated with government assurances that seem unfulfilled.
