Ilorin, Nigeria — Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State confirmed the release of 38 worshippers from the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Eruku, abducted during a violent incident at the church. The victims regained their freedom on Sunday after several days of intense collaboration among security forces and government agencies.
The governor praised the operation that led to their release, attributing its success to President Bola Tinubu’s proactive stance. He noted that Tinubu took personal charge of the rescue efforts, even canceling plans to attend the G20 summit in South Africa to address security concerns in Kwara and Kebbi States.
AbdulRazaq thanked key security agencies, including the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Department of State Services, the Nigerian Army, and the Nigeria Police Force for their swift responses. At the government’s behest, additional tactical teams were deployed to the region, bolstering local law enforcement’s capabilities.
The community and religious leaders also played a pivotal role during the crisis, providing support and resources, which the governor acknowledged in his remarks. This collaborative approach illustrated the importance of community involvement in enhancing security in vulnerable regions.
The incident that prompted the rescue garnered widespread condemnation. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) expressed outrage, describing the attack on the church during a prayer service as “heartbreaking and sad.” The violent episode left several worshippers dead and raised significant concerns about ongoing insecurity in the area.
This attack not only shattered a peaceful gathering but also struck a chord within the wider Christian community, highlighting persistent issues surrounding religious violence and safety. The call for justice from various quarters further emphasizes the need for improved security measures in places of worship across the nation.
As the community continues to heal from the trauma, local leaders are urging the government to maintain heightened security and regular patrols to prevent future incidents. The strong response from both the community and government indicates a commitment to ensuring safety for worshippers and fostering a more secure environment for all citizens.
