SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI – Gypsy Rose Blanchard, recently released from prison after pleading guilty to the killing of her mother, has revealed shocking details about her life in a new docuseries. In interviews for Lifetime’s “The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard,” she disclosed that she once shot her mother at their home before the fatal stabbing in 2015.
Blanchard described years of abuse at the hands of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard, which led to her growing desperation to escape. She alleged that her mother had a rare mental condition called Munchausen syndrome by proxy, leading to unnecessary and painful medical procedures for imaginary illnesses.
Abuse and manipulation by her mother only worsened as Blanchard sought independence. Dee Dee insisted that her daughter suffered from various serious illnesses, forcing her to use a feeding tube and confining her to a wheelchair, despite the fact that Blanchard could walk unassisted.
In 2011, Blanchard attempted to run away, only to be brought back home by her mother and chained to a bed for two weeks. The situation escalated when Dee Dee bought a gun, causing Blanchard to fear for her life. This fear eventually led to a confrontation that resulted in Blanchard pulling the trigger, realizing too late that the gun was not lethal.
Despite her relief at not killing her mother, Blanchard felt defeated and trapped in her mother’s manipulation. This desperation ultimately led her to conspire with her boyfriend, Nick Godejohn, to kill Dee Dee in 2015.
Blanchard pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. She was released early last month, while Godejohn received a life sentence for first-degree murder.
The harrowing accounts shared by Blanchard shed light on the complexities of her upbringing and the extreme measures she felt compelled to take in order to escape a life of abuse and manipulation. The new docuseries provides a platform for her to share her experiences and account for her actions.
