Fort Mill, North Carolina – A guest’s refusal to abide by height restrictions at Carowinds theme park led to a violent altercation that resulted in the guest being arrested. The incident occurred when 28-year-old Jalen Cohen became irate after being told that his son did not meet the height requirement to ride the Woodstock Express roller coaster in Camp Snoopy. Cohen, displeased that his child had been allowed on the ride earlier but then deemed too short upon recheck, began making threatening statements towards park employees and demanded a refund for his child’s inability to ride.
Local law enforcement was called to the scene, where Detective David Beard and park supervisor Michael Parsons attempted to handle the situation. Despite being asked to leave the park, Cohen resisted and kicked Officer Beard multiple times, leading to his detainment and eventual release on bond. The altercation resulted in injuries to Officer Beard, who was treated for bloody knees and elbows.
Height restrictions are put in place at theme parks to ensure the safety of all guests, but incidents of guests reacting violently to such rules are not unprecedented. Previous cases have seen guests behaving aggressively when their children were denied access to certain rides due to height requirements. In another instance, a guest threatened and filmed cast members at Disneyland for enforcing height restrictions.
Carowinds, in addition to dealing with this recent incident, faced temporary closure of its Fury 325 ride due to safety concerns. The park had to address a crack in a steel support pillar, attributing it to bending fatigue. Despite the challenges, the ride was reopened in top condition after repairs were completed.
The clash between Cohen and park staff at Carowinds highlights the importance of adhering to safety regulations at theme parks and the potential consequences of failing to do so. Height restrictions are in place for the well-being of all guests, and it is crucial for visitors to respect and follow these guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.
