Flaxmere, New Zealand — A local man is among ten individuals being honored with the New Zealand Bravery Awards after he heroically intervened in a violent stabbing incident, potentially saving the victim’s life. Junior Fa’amalosi Isaako displayed remarkable courage during a chaotic encounter that took place in June, bringing to light the extraordinary acts of bravery that often unfold in everyday settings.
Isaako was asleep at home when he awoke to loud arguing outside. Investigating the disturbance, he witnessed a man attacking another individual across the street. Armed with a knife, the assailant stabbed the victim multiple times, while an accomplice kicked and punched the injured man as he lay curled on the ground.
Recognizing the dire situation, Isaako rushed outside and confronted the attackers. His decisive actions caused one of the assailants to flee, while he placed the armed attacker in a hold, successfully disarming him in the process. After eliminating the threat, Isaako swiftly moved the wounded man to safety. He fashioned a makeshift tourniquet from a towel and applied pressure to the victim’s injuries before dialing emergency services for assistance.
When law enforcement arrived, Isaako continued to provide first aid support until paramedics took over. The victim was eventually stabilized and transported to Hawke’s Bay Hospital for further medical treatment.
In the aftermath, authorities charged a 39-year-old man with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He is set to appear in Napier District Court later this month.
At the forthcoming Bravery Awards ceremony, Isaako and another recipient, a young boy who protected his father from serious harm, will be honored with the New Zealand Bravery Decoration. The remaining eight recipients will receive the New Zealand Bravery Medal, highlighting an array of courageous acts that have prevented further injury or loss of life.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon praised the honorees, emphasizing the significance of their bravery in confronting dangerous situations. He noted that none of the awardees acted with foreknowledge of how they would respond in a crisis, yet each displayed unwavering selflessness that made a substantial difference in the lives of others.
“These ten cases showcase the extraordinary nature of human compassion and courage,” Luxon stated. “Each person here has set aside their own safety to aid another, and we owe them a great debt of gratitude.”
