Durham, United Kingdom – A violent altercation that took place earlier this year between David Fletcher and a woman he previously pursued romantically resulted in a prison sentence for Fletcher after a bystander courageously intervened during the attack. Teesside Crown Court heard harrowing details of the May 2 attack during which Fletcher, 62, from Dean Road, South Shields, used a knife to repeatedly stab the victim, whose relationship with him had soured. The appalling assault was only interrupted by the bravery of a second woman who wrestled with Fletcher in an attempt to stop him.
The prosecutor, Paul Abrahams, informed the court that the accused and the victim knew each other for several years and had been intimately involved for about a year before the incident. On that day, Fletcher met the victim as she returned from visiting her son, and accused her of being unfaithful, which escalated into the brutal assault.
According to police reports, Fletcher dragged the woman into a secluded area next to a charity building and commenced his assault. The victim, initially under the impression she was being punched, soon realized she was being stabbed when she saw the knife in Fletcher’s hand. Her screams drew the attention of a nearby resident who bravely confronted Fletcher, managing to disarm him after a struggle, despite sustaining injuries herself.
In her victim impact statement, the primary victim revealed the profound psychological trauma she has endured since the attack. She described feeling a pervasive distrust even towards close friends and significant mental health deterioration to the point of isolation.
The court also noted Fletcher’s violent history, highlighting several prior convictions including an incident where he rammed a van into a car while the same victim was a passenger.
Defense attorney Vic Laffey described the relationship between Fletcher and the victim as ‘bizarre,’ acknowledging the severe consequences of Fletcher’s actions. He mentioned that his client recognized the gravity of his actions and the potentially fatal outcome had it not been for the intervenor’s heroism.
Presiding Judge Francis Laird KC condemned the attack, noting the defendant’s destructive actions against a woman he previously endeavored to help. The judge sentenced Fletcher to 17 years in prison, followed by four more years under extended license, emphasizing the severity of the offense.
Judge Laird also commended the courage of the woman who intervened, declaring her actions as instrumental in altering the outcome of what could have been an even greater tragedy.
