Illinois man finds texts from another man on his wife’s phone so he kicks her to death at their home

NAPERVILLE, IL – A DuPage County man is facing life in prison after being found guilty of first-degree murder in the deadly beating of his wife, following a heated argument reportedly sparked by messages he discovered on her cellphone.

Alan Wang, 61, was convicted this week in a bench trial for killing his wife, Hongyan Yang, 35, at their home in suburban Naperville. The verdict, handed down by Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh, followed four days of testimony and evidence detailing a violent encounter that ended in tragedy.

Authorities say the incident unfolded in early March 2020, when Wang confronted his wife after stumbling upon text messages from another man on her phone. According to prosecutors, the confrontation quickly escalated, and Wang repeatedly kicked Yang as they were on the bed in their shared bedroom.

Emergency responders were called to the residence on the afternoon of March 8, 2020, after a family member reported that Yang was unresponsive. Paramedics arrived to find Yang not breathing, and she was soon pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation by Naperville police revealed that Yang had suffered deep bruising and soft tissue hemorrhaging to her legs, injuries consistent with repeated blunt force trauma. The DuPage County coroner’s autopsy report later confirmed that the cause of death was a direct result of the assault.

Wang was initially arrested and charged with aggravated domestic battery, but the charges were upgraded to first-degree murder following the release of the autopsy findings. During the trial, Wang claimed he had only been trying to rouse his wife from sleep and did not intend to cause serious harm.

However, prosecutors maintained that the force and nature of Yang’s injuries could not be explained by a simple attempt to wake someone. Testimony during the proceedings emphasized the severity and brutality of the attack, undermining Wang’s account.

The conviction was announced Wednesday following the trial in DuPage County Court. Prosecutors praised the outcome, asserting that the verdict delivered justice for Yang, whose life was cut short in a “brutal” manner.

Wang now awaits sentencing, with his next court date set for November 12, where post-trial motions will be considered. The decision in this case brings a somber resolution for Yang’s family, who continue to grieve her loss more than four years after her death.

The DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office extended condolences to Yang’s loved ones and reaffirmed its commitment to prosecuting domestic violence cases. Under Illinois law, first-degree murder convictions can carry life sentences, though the court will determine Wang’s punishment at a future hearing.
