Freeport, Ill. — A tragic event unfolded Thursday morning as two men were found dead in what authorities are investigating as a possible murder-suicide. The Freeport Police were alerted to a shooting shortly after 7:30 a.m. at a residence on South Galena Avenue.
Upon arrival at the 1700 block of South Galena Avenue, officers discovered the bodies of 51-year-old Chad Wirsing and 50-year-old Paul Laird, both of whom succumbed to apparent gunshot wounds. Initial findings indicate that Wirsing sustained multiple gunshot wounds, while Laird appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Two firearms were recovered at the scene, one located near Laird’s body and another found tucked away in his clothing.
A note affixed to Laird’s body reportedly provided insight into his motives, although police have not disclosed its exact contents. According to investigators, both men resided at the home where the incident took place, suggesting a domestic context to the tragic scenario.
Authorities are treating this case as isolated, reassuring the public that there is no ongoing threat. As the investigation continues, the Stephenson County Coroner will work to determine the official causes of death through autopsies slated to take place.
Earlier in the day, the Freeport Police confirmed the situation led to an extensive response, effectively closing down the area for several hours while investigators examined the scene. By Thursday afternoon, law enforcement began reopening South Galena Avenue as the investigation escalated.
