DUBLIN, Ireland — An Indian man has decided to return to India after suffering a violent attack by a group of teenagers over the weekend. This incident has sparked concern among the Indian community in Ireland, which is increasingly feeling unsafe amid a recent wave of assaults.
The victim, who requested anonymity, described the attack that occurred Sunday evening while he was walking home from Fairview Park. As he walked, one of the assailants, riding an electric scooter, struck him in the stomach. Attempting to evade the situation, he soon found himself outnumbered, with two others joining in the assault.
The man recounted that the attack intensified as the group continued to kick and punch him even after he collapsed to the ground. One attacker seized his metal water bottle and struck him above the eye, resulting in a deep laceration that required stitches at a local hospital.
Irish authorities, including An Garda Síochána, have confirmed they are investigating the assault, which marks yet another incident amid a troubling trend of violence targeting the Indian community in the country. In the aftermath of this attack, the victim’s parents expressed their worry and urged him to return to India, which he has since begun to arrange.
Many individuals within the community are reporting heightened fears, with several friends of the victim expressing their reluctance to go outside. Some are even contemplating leaving Ireland altogether due to the prevailing atmosphere of fear.
In an effort to address growing concerns, the Indian Ambassador to Ireland, Akhilesh Mishra, met with key figures from An Garda Síochána to discuss the situation. This conversation follows a strong condemnation from Irish President Michael D. Higgins, who called the attacks “despicable” and incompatible with the values cherished by Irish society.
Higgins issued his statement after the Archbishop of Dublin also criticized the violence, labeling the incidents as “shocking” and “unprovoked.” The tension culminated in the Ireland India Council’s decision to postpone its annual “India Day” celebrations, initially scheduled for Sunday, reflecting the community’s insecurity.
As investigations by the police continue, officials are in touch with those affected by the assaults, aiming to provide support and address community safety concerns.
