LIMA, Peru — Authorities are investigating the assassination of an Indonesian official in the Peruvian capital, calling it a likely contract killing. Zetro Leonardo Purba, 40, was shot dead while cycling home from work in the Lince neighborhood on Monday evening.
Witnesses reported that Purba was confronted by an assailant who shot him at close range, targeting his head as he fell to the ground. Security camera footage captures the harrowing moments, as the shooter fled on a motorcycle driven by an accomplice. Purba’s wife was present during the attack, and he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival at a local hospital.
Peru’s police and public prosecutor’s office are currently examining the surrounding area for additional security footage that may shed light on the crime. Investigators have noted suspicious activity involving a motorcycle and individuals lingering near Purba’s residence in the days leading up to the murder.
The brazen nature of the assault has alarmed the local community. Although Peru has seen a concerning rise in violent crime, particularly extortion and contract-style killings, attacks on foreigners are uncommon. In 2025, the country has recorded over 1,500 homicides, reflecting an increase of more than 20% compared to the previous year.
Interior Minister Carlos Malaver labeled the shooting a calculated execution, pointing out that nothing was stolen from the victim. “They were waiting for him,” Malaver said during a session in Congress discussing the rising crime rates. “The bullets hit him in the head, and we are not ruling anything out. There are certain criminal acts that cannot always be anticipated.”
In response to the tragedy, Peru’s foreign ministry expressed its deepest sympathies and condemnation of the act. Foreign Minister Elmer Schialer visited the hospital where Purba passed away, offering to enhance police protection for embassy staff amid growing concerns for their safety.
Indonesia’s Foreign Minister, Sugiono, confirmed that Purba had been serving as a chancery officer at the Indonesian embassy for five months and was regarded as a dedicated employee. Sugiono shared his condolences and communicated his desire for a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the murder. He also emphasized the importance of safeguarding diplomatic personnel and Indonesian nationals residing in Peru.
As investigations continue, the case has drawn attention to broader issues of safety for foreign diplomats and citizens in the region. The shocking nature of this crime raises concern about the capability of authorities to maintain safety in an environment where violent crime appears increasingly pervasive.
