Jamshedpur, India — A notorious sharpshooter, Anuj Kanaujia, affiliated with the Mukhtar Ansari gang, was killed in a gun battle with police in Jamshedpur on Saturday night, according to officials from the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (UPSTF). The clash also resulted in injuries to a deputy superintendent, highlighting the ongoing confrontation between law enforcement and organized crime in the region.
The encounter was the culmination of a coordinated effort by the UPSTF’s Gorakhpur unit and the Jharkhand Police, aimed at apprehending Kanaujia, who had been evading capture for over five years. Kanaujia was implicated in a litany of criminal activities spanning murder, extortion, and arms trafficking, with a total of 23 cases registered against him. Just recently, the Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police Prashant Kumar had increased the reward for information leading to his capture to Rs 2.5 lakh.
According to Amitabh Yash, the Additional DG of Law and Order, the operation was triggered by specific intelligence about Kanaujia’s location. When confronted by the police, Kanaujia fired nearly 20 rounds and even used a bomb in an attempt to evade arrest. The ensuing firefight lasted for several intense minutes, during which Deputy Superintendent DK Shahi sustained a shoulder injury but continued to lead his team. Kanaujia suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead after being transported to a hospital.
In the aftermath of the shootout, authorities recovered firearms, ammunition, and several mobile phones from the scene. These phones are currently under examination as police seek further insights into Kanaujia’s criminal network.
Kanaujia hailed from Bahlolpur village in Chiraiyakot, Mau, and over the years had established himself as a feared figure in the criminal underworld associated with Mukhtar Ansari. The breadth of his criminal activities extended across several districts, including Ghazipur and Azamgarh, contributing further to his notoriety.
In response to escalating activities by organized crime groups, local law enforcement has ramped up operations to dismantle their networks. Recently, as part of a statewide crackdown on mafia activities, authorities demolished Kanaujia’s house in Azamgarh and detained several of his family members under the Gangster Act.
The incident not only underscores the violent lengths to which criminals will go to evade capture but also the dangers law enforcement officers face in their line of duty. The steady cooperation between state police forces, as demonstrated by the collaboration between Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand, signifies a continued commitment to curbing organized crime that frequently crosses state boundaries.
