New York, NY – The murder trial of two men accused in the fatal shooting of influential hip-hop DJ Jam Master Jay has finally begun, more than two decades after the musician’s death. Born Jason Mizell, the DJ for the popular group Run-DMC was killed in a recording studio in 2002. His godson, Karl Jordan Jr., and childhood friend, Ronald Washington, are facing charges for the murder, which allegedly stemmed from a drug dispute.
Prosecutors in the Eastern District of New York have chosen not to pursue the death penalty for the suspects. However, a third man, Jay Bryant, has also been charged in connection with the murder and will be tried separately. All three men have maintained their innocence and pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them.
The prosecution claims that Jordan and Washington plotted to kill Jam Master Jay after he removed Washington from a drug deal involving a significant amount of cocaine. Assistant U.S. Attorney Miranda Gonzalez described the murder as an ambush motivated by greed and revenge during opening statements. According to Gonzalez, eyewitnesses present at the studio on the night of the shooting will provide crucial testimony throughout the trial.
In response, the defense attorneys for Jordan and Washington argued that the police have not definitively identified the person responsible for Jam Master Jay’s death. They emphasized the importance of remaining skeptical of witnesses cooperating with authorities in exchange for leniency in their own legal troubles. Additionally, they questioned the motivation behind the murder, particularly in the case of Washington, who was financially supported by the rapper.
