HILLSBORO, Ore. — A jury in Washington County has convicted David James Kozak on multiple charges, including second-degree attempted murder and arson, following a brutal attack on his former girlfriend that escalated into a devastating fire. The incident marked a tragic chapter in a domestic violence case that left a significant impact on the local community.
On April 24, 2025, Judge Theodore Sims sentenced Kozak to 20 years and 5 months in prison and mandated that he pay over $719,000 in restitution to cover damages incurred during the incident. The charges arose from a violent episode on February 22, 2023, in which Kozak attacked his girlfriend with a butcher knife, inflicting severe injuries.
The victim was attacked in their Raleigh Hills apartment, where Kozak stabbed her multiple times in critical areas such as the neck and head. In a desperate bid for safety, she escaped to a neighbor’s apartment just before losing consciousness. The quick actions of neighbors, who called 911, led to the arrival of deputies from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
Upon their arrival, first responders learned that Kozak had not only assaulted the victim but had also attempted to set their apartment ablaze. Despite swift efforts from deputies to extinguish the fire, it relit and ultimately decimated the building. The tragedy resulted in the displacement of eight residents and the loss of three pet cats.
During the arrest, law enforcement discovered two lighters in Kozak’s possession, indicating a premeditated intent to incite the fire. The severity of his actions highlights the ongoing issues surrounding domestic violence and its far-reaching consequences.
As part of his sentencing, Kozak is prohibited from contacting the victims and will undergo three years of post-prison supervision after his release. Additionally, he has been barred from owning any pets for five years, reflecting the court’s broader concern for safety in the aftermath of his violent behavior.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with domestic violence and the critical need for community awareness and support for victims. Local advocates stress the importance of programs to prevent such incidents and provide safe spaces for those affected.
