LAGOS, Nigeria — Police in Lagos have arrested multiple individuals connected to a violent incident that unfolded at Tejuosho Market in the Surulere area. The disturbance began under the pretense of a protest regarding a power outage but quickly escalated into chaos as individuals turned against both police officers and property.
The Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, reported that the assailants vandalized parts of a nearby bank and targeted police personnel stationed there. According to the statement, officers successfully repelled the assaults, demonstrating restraint while securing the premises from further intrusion.
On September 18, at approximately 2:30 p.m., authorities received urgent reports that a group was attacking customers and damaging goods throughout the market. In response, Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh ordered immediate deployment of additional police units to restore order and ensure public safety.
The police reported that the disturbances led to the targeted attack on Mobile Policemen assigned to oversee security at the commercial bank. Despite the threats, these personnel effectively defended the bank and managed to prevent further attacks on nearby police installations in the market.
During their operations, police successfully managed to disperse the rioters, apprehending 18 individuals involved in the violence. Following the intervention, the market resumed normal activities, allowing traders and customers to safely conduct their business.
The suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue. Law enforcement officials have vowed to pursue additional arrests related to the incident, reiterating their commitment to maintaining peace in the area.
Residents have been reassured that the situation in Tejuosho Market is under control and that security protocols remain in effect. The police command urged community members and market traders to remain calm while recalling the necessity of preserving public order.
Jimoh emphasized that aggressive behavior toward police officers and vandalism of property will not be tolerated, advising citizens to respect law enforcement as they carry out their duties to protect lives and property. In addition, he encouraged locals to report any grievances to their nearest police station, ensuring a collaborative effort in community safety.
