Lexington Park Man Faces Second-Degree Assault Charges Following Violent Domestic Dispute

LEXINGTON PARK, Md. — A Lexington Park resident was arrested on September 24 following an alleged domestic assault that escalated during a verbal dispute. John Richard Gregory III, 44, faces charges of second-degree assault as a result of the incident, according to statements made by the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities responded to a residence where they encountered two people leaving the scene. One victim described an escalating argument with Gregory that turned physical. She reported that Gregory became increasingly hostile, throwing objects throughout their home before allegedly assaulting her.

The victim’s account includes claims that Gregory choked her with one hand and struck her in the face using a wrench. Deputies observed injuries that corroborated her statements, and the confrontation was reportedly diffused when another household member intervened.

Initially, Gregory denied being involved in any physical altercation. However, he later claimed that the other household member attacked him and placed him in a chokehold. Deputies noted that Gregory did not have any visible injuries. He was subsequently arrested and taken to the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center.

Under Maryland law, second-degree assault is categorized as a misdemeanor, punishable by a prison sentence of up to 10 years and a potential fine of $2,500 for a conviction.

Court records reveal that Gregory’s trial is slated for November 4, 2025, at 9 a.m. in St. Mary’s District Court. The case will continue to unfold as legal proceedings progress.
