WILLOWBROOK, Calif. — Authorities are investigating a series of murders that may be connected to the violent death of former NFL player Kevin Johnson, whose body was discovered at a homeless encampment along the L.A. River. The 55-year-old was found on January 21, suffering from blunt force trauma and stab wounds, which investigators have ruled as homicide.
Johnson’s death is being examined in the context of at least three other killings involving homeless individuals in the same area, often referred to as Compton Creek. With a history of what may be related violence, the investigation has heightened concern among community members and advocates for the homeless.
The troubling pattern began on October 5, 2025, when a 52-year-old woman named Michelle Steele was fatally shot in the head. Following her death, which was ruled a homicide after she succumbed to her injuries in November, another victim, 52-year-old Octavio Arias, was killed on December 4. The medical examiner’s office reported that Arias died from severe head and neck trauma.
The most recent victim, Mauro Alfaro, also believed to be in his 50s, was found dead on January 26, shortly after Johnson. His cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma. Investigators from the L.A. County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau are actively exploring the possibility that all four deaths are the work of a single assailant, though a suspect has yet to be identified.
Detectives face additional challenges as they attempt to determine the motives behind these brutal killings. Preliminary theories consider whether the suspected perpetrator holds animosity toward the homeless community or if the killings are linked to drug-related activities or gang involvement. However, there is currently no concrete evidence that firmly connects the cases.
Eight detectives are working diligently on this investigation, but gathering information from the homeless population in the area has proven difficult. In response, outreach efforts are being made by county workers to encourage the homeless to relocate to safer housing solutions, a necessary step as the investigation continues.
