ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. — A local restaurant owner endured a violent attack inside his own establishment, leading to charges against a 20-year-old man, authorities confirmed. The unsettling incident, which took place at Amigo Street Tacos on Saturday evening, was recorded and quickly spread across the internet, causing community dismay.
The accused, Daveon Jahmel Godbold from Eastpointe, was apprehended shortly after during a traffic stop near the scene. He faces multiple charges including unarmed robbery, resisting arrest, property damage, aggravated assault, and narcotics offenses. Following his arraignment Tuesday, conditions for his release include a $25,000 personal bond and mandatory GPS monitoring.
Police reports suggest the conflict began over a DoorDash order and escalated from a dispute about the restroom facilities, which were reportedly out of service at the time. Jose Perez, the 45-year-old victim and owner of the restaurant, detailed that the confrontation started when he informed the suspect that he could not fulfill his order due to inappropriate behavior in the inoperative restroom.
Perez recounted that the situation quickly escalated after he refused to hand over the food order. The alleged assailant then proceeded to throw the food onto the floor and engage in violent actions, prompting Perez to call emergency services. Before fleeing, the suspect also inflicted damage to a window of the establishment.
Later, surveillance footage captured the suspect returning with an accomplice, both of whom then assaulted Perez. Discussing the ordeal, Perez expressed his primary focus during the attack was to protect himself and seek safety. He sustained several injuries, including swelling to his head, back, and knees.
Currently, authorities are on the lookout for the accomplice involved in the second wave of the attack. The local community has rallied around Perez, who owns a total of five dining locations across the greater Detroit area, demonstrating support for him and his business in the aftermath of the assault.
Law enforcement and community leaders are urging anyone with information related to the incident or the suspects to come forward. Contact with the St. Clair Shores Police Department can provide valuable assistance in resolving this case and helping to secure the safety of local business owners.
