PATCHOGUE, N.Y. — A Bellport man faces murder charges after allegedly using a crowbar to fatally assault another man in front of a child, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. Darrell Trent, 46, has been indicted for second-degree murder in connection with the death of 45-year-old Carlos Bonaparte, an incident that has shocked the local community.
The alleged attack occurred in the early hours of May 18 outside Bonaparte’s residence in East Patchogue. According to authorities, Bonaparte was outside with his young daughter when he was confronted by a cousin of his girlfriend, leading to a heated verbal dispute. This exchange prompted the cousin to summon Trent to the scene.
Reports indicate that Trent arrived shortly thereafter, wielding what appeared to be a crowbar. He is accused of striking Bonaparte with the weapon, causing fatal injuries. Eyewitnesses, including Bonaparte’s daughter, reportedly witnessed the violent encounter unfold.
Emergency responders transported Bonaparte to Long Island Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Following the alleged murder, Trent fled the area but was apprehended nearly a week later in Shaker Heights, Ohio, as authorities worked to locate him.
On June 9, Trent was arraigned before Acting County Court Justice James McDonaugh. During the proceedings, McDonaugh ordered him held without bail while the case is actively being processed. Trent’s next court appearance is scheduled for July 2.
Matthew Touhey, representing Trent, emphasized the complexity of the case, noting ongoing investigations into factual details and possible defenses. “Mr. Trent is maintaining his innocence,” he stated, suggesting that the legal proceedings may reveal more information as they unfold.
The case has ignited community outrage, with local leaders and residents calling for justice. Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney condemned the violent act, affirming the commitment to hold those responsible accountable. “Such acts of violence have no place in our community,” he declared, highlighting the disturbing nature of the crime and the impact it has on families.
As the legal process continues, the community remains on edge, grappling with the fear instilled by such a brazen act of violence. As the situation develops, updates are expected regarding both the ongoing investigation and Trent’s upcoming court appearances.
