Loss: Community Mourns 12-Year-Old Ja’nylen Greggs Killed in Innocent Drive-By Shooting

ATLANTA — A 12-year-old boy identified as Ja’nylen Greggs was fatally shot during a drive-by incident on Thursday evening while playing basketball at a neighborhood court. Family members confirmed the tragic news, describing him as a beloved figure in their community.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner confirmed Greggs’ identity, stating he sustained injuries from a stray bullet. Emergency efforts to save the young boy were unfortunately unsuccessful. “This shouldn’t have happened to my nephew,” said his uncle, Mario McCrary. “You can see how much he was loved by everyone in the neighborhood.”

According to police, the shooting was linked to a confrontation between two groups in the vicinity of an apartment complex. Witnesses reported that the assailants fled the scene in a blue vehicle. As investigations continue, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens vowed to pursue the offenders, aiming to hold them accountable under the law. “We will find the shooter and ensure justice is served,” he remarked.

In a poignant gesture, Dickens reached out to the grieving family, expressing his sorrow. “I cried with them. This is not the future we envision for our city,” he added. The mayor also noted a significant reduction in homicides over the past three years, highlighting ongoing community efforts to enhance public safety.

In response to the shooting, police established a temporary surveillance tower at the scene near 3200 Cushman Circle SW and increased patrols in the area. McCrary criticized the apartment complex’s management for not intensifying security measures prior to the incident, citing a previous shooting in the area from which he narrowly escaped injury. “There should have been some actions taken,” he stated, reflecting the urgency felt by residents.

Adding to the community’s grief, relatives shared that just nine days before his death, they celebrated Greggs’ birthday, and he had recently earned a spot on his school’s basketball team. In light of the circumstances, Crime Stoppers of Greater Atlanta announced a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the shooting.

As the community mourns, many continue to rally for justice and safety, urging local leaders to implement more robust oversight to prevent further tragedies.
