Brooksville, FL — A tragic incident unfolded in Hernando County where a 16-year-old girl was found dead following what authorities described as a violent attack. The young victim, identified as Abbriella Elliott, was discovered by a hiker in a wooded area near Cypress Lakes Preserve early Thursday morning.
According to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office, the severity of Elliott’s injuries indicated that the attack was exceedingly violent and involved the use of an edged weapon. Sheriff Al Nienhuis commented on the nature of the assault at a press conference, highlighting the intense passion and violence evidenced by the crime scene.
The sheriff’s office also reported that a witness came forward stating that Elliott had left her home in the early hours of March 27 to meet someone. This individual, purported by the witness to be the likely assailant, was later identified when police arrested a 16-year-old boy in connection with the murder. While the suspect’s identity remains protected due to his minor status, he is expected to face charges as an adult for first-degree murder.
This individual reportedly had a history with the victim; Elliott’s parents disclosed to local media that he was her former boyfriend and the two had ended their relationship about six months prior to the incident. The authorities, however, have yet to confirm the exact nature of their past relationship.
At the time of his arrest, the suspect’s criminal history was noted to include a prior battery charge from the previous year. The news of this event and subsequent arrest has shaken the local community, already reeling from the loss of a young life described by many as full of kindness and brightness.
Elliott was celebrated in her community for her infectious smile, compassion, and ability to uplift those around her. Her obituary mentions how her spirit “shone brightly” and her remarkable capacity for making others feel loved and cherished reflected her vibrant personality.
In her memory, a vigil was held on March 30, where her mother, Danyel Caltagirone, spoke about her daughter’s radiant influence, noting, “She could put a smile on anybody’s face. Everyone who met her, she left an impact on.”
In response to the tragedy, the Elliott family created a GoFundMe to support funeral expenses. The fundraiser has garnered significant community support, amassing over $10,500 from more than 150 donors, illustrating the community’s solidarity and heartfelt response to the tragedy.
The Hernando County Police have not provided further comments on the ongoing investigation. Meanwhile, the local and wider community continues to mourn as they seek justice for Abbriella Elliott and remember a life that touched many others profoundly, yet was cut tragically short.
