BATON ROUGE, LA – A Baton Rouge man faces charges of first-degree murder following a police investigation spurred by unsettling voice recordings sent to his brother. Ian Seghers, 34, is accused of killing his stepfather, Walter Rowland, 66, amid what authorities describe as a deteriorating familial relationship.
Investigators assert that Seghers recorded messages for his brother via Facebook detailing the murder. In these recordings, Seghers allegedly confesses to concealing a hammer in his clothing before the alleged attack. The recordings were ultimately shared with authorities by Seghers’ brother, Sean Crawford, leading to the arrest.
Rowland was reported missing in early March, failing to attend a customary weekly gathering with his sister. Despite extensive searches, his body has not been discovered. However, authorities claim there is significant evidence implicating Seghers in the crime, including forensic evidence found in Rowland’s residence.
Court documents reveal that Seghers purportedly requested assistance to clean up the crime scene within the voice messages, noting the need to dispose of contaminated carpeting. These admissions, coupled with forensic findings of blood at the scene, significantly contributed to the charges against him.
Crawford expressed internal conflict over his decision to alert law enforcement, battling feelings of betrayal against his obligation to expose the crime. “It felt wrong, but he called me for help in a murder,” Crawford explained about his difficult choice to act.
Before law enforcement closed in, Seghers allegedly took his stepfather’s truck, fleeing to Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Authorities detained him on March 22, bolstered by evidence amassed from the crime site. Investigators suspect Seghers and Rowland lived together and experienced ongoing domestic issues leading up to the alleged murder.
Despite the absence of Rowland’s body, police maintain that technological advances and detailed forensic evidence provide a compelling case against Seghers. The local law enforcement spokesperson underscored their confidence in the investigative findings, noting the clear evidence of a violent event at the residence.
