TELLER COUNTY, Colo. – The Teller County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a Thursday night explosion that destroyed a mailbox south of Florissant. Deputies responded to a report of an explosion in a mail parcel box at the intersection of County Road 11 and High Chateau Road. The explosion destroyed a unit of four mailboxes used to contain oversized packages, and authorities do not believe it is related to a package delivery.
The Metro Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) is assisting with the investigation, and the United States Postal Inspectors have been notified. Law enforcement officials have stated that there is no immediate danger to the community, but they are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the sheriff’s office.
In an interview with News5, Delsa Brown, a neighbor in the area, described hearing a loud bang on Thursday evening. She expressed that the sound was different and not reminiscent of a gunshot, leaving her and her family confused about what it could be. Other neighbors also reported hearing the explosion, with the mailboxes located at the end of a driveway.
The area residents, who have lived there for the past 30 years, described the explosion as an unprecedented event, with the blast so forceful that it damaged the mailboxes and spread pieces up to 20 feet away. Authorities emphasized the seriousness of the incident, highlighting the potential dangers associated with handling explosive devices.
The US Postal Inspection Service reiterated the severity of the crime, stating that damaging a mailbox with an explosive is not only a federal offense but also poses a risk to mail carriers and postal customers. The agency urged the public to report any suspicious activity and offered several tips to protect mail and letter carriers.
This incident, which resulted in the destruction of multiple mailboxes, is being treated with utmost seriousness by authorities, who are actively seeking information from the public to aid in the investigation. If found, those responsible for the explosion could face state and federal felony charges. The US Postal Inspection Service is working closely with the Teller County Sheriff’s Office to uncover the details surrounding this destructive act.
