DENVER, CO – A Colorado man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after admitting to killing his wife earlier this year in their Denver home, authorities said.
Brian Mervin, 51, pleaded guilty last week to second-degree murder in the death of Cheri Kommer, bringing an end to the legal proceedings stemming from the August incident. He originally faced a more severe first-degree murder charge before accepting a deal for a lesser count.
The killing occurred on August 20 at a residence on the 4000 block of North Adams Street. According to investigators, Mervin flagged down a passerby that evening, requesting a call to emergency services. He reportedly told the individual he had discovered his wife on the floor, struggling to breathe.
Responding officers noted that Mervin appeared agitated and winded when they arrived at the home. Emergency personnel found Kommer unresponsive on a bed, with extensive injuries to her neck and other signs suggesting strangulation. Medical workers noted additional abrasions consistent with a violent confrontation.
While paramedics treated Kommer in an ambulance outside the residence, Mervin remained inside, seen smoking a cigarette and drinking a soda. Authorities said he showed little outward concern for his wife’s condition during this time.
Following her transport to a local hospital, Kommer was pronounced dead. A subsequent examination at the coroner’s office revealed further injuries, including scratches and bruises across her back. According to investigators, the wounds matched the pattern of injuries expected if someone had been dragged through rough terrain. Her clothing was found soiled with dirt and debris.
During police questioning, Mervin’s statements regarding the circumstances of Kommer’s injuries reportedly changed several times, though specific details remain unavailable due to redactions in the official affidavit. Authorities described his account as inconsistent, fueling suspicion around his involvement.
Neighbors told police that arguments between a man and woman were common at the couple’s home. One nearby resident recalled hearing raised voices and loud noises, suggesting possible objects being thrown in the house around the time of the incident, but did not witness any physical altercation.
As part of his plea agreement, Mervin was ordered to serve 25 years in a state correctional facility. His sentencing brings closure to a case that unsettled residents in the quiet Denver neighborhood.
