Manhunt Intensifies for Montana Bar Shooting Suspect as Authorities Warn of Public Danger

Anaconda, Mont. — Authorities are intensifying their search for Michael Paul Brown, the suspect linked to a tragic shooting that took the lives of four individuals at a local bar on Friday. With Brown still at large, officials issued urgent warnings to residents that he may return to the Anaconda area, where the incident occurred.

During a news briefing on Sunday, Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen described Brown as “an unstable individual who committed these murders without provocation.” He urged the public to stay alert, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation and to contact law enforcement immediately if they spot him. A reward of $7,500 has been announced for anyone who can provide information leading to Brown’s capture.

The victims of the shooting have been identified as 64-year-old Nancy Kelley, who worked as a bartender, and patrons Daniel Baillie, 59, David Leach, 70, and Tony Palm, 74. All four were well-known in the community. Kelley’s daughter, Kristian, expressed her shock, stating her mother had recently retired from nursing and took the bartending job to maintain a social life.

“Mom loved working at the Owl Bar, and it was a great way for her to connect with people,” Kristian recalled. Unfortunately, her mother was among those caught in the chaos when Brown allegedly opened fire shortly after 10:30 a.m.

Witnesses indicate that Brown, who resides near the bar, was familiar with the victims, potentially making the crime even more unsettling. “I think it’s likely he knew the bartender and these patrons,” Knudsen noted, emphasizing the disturbing nature of the crime. The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation, but authorities are focusing their efforts on Brown’s mental health history, as he is reported to have exhibited troubling behavior.

Brown is known to have a criminal record and faces accusations of being armed and dangerous. Authorities reported that he was last seen wearing a tie-dye shirt, blue jeans, and an orange bandana, but a recently released image appears to show him in just his boxers after fleeing the scene.

Law enforcement has conducted searches in areas surrounding Stumptown Road and Barker Lake, where Brown is familiar with the terrain. Knudsen stated that there is a high level of community involvement in the manhunt, with both air and ground resources mobilized to locate the suspect. As the search narrows, authorities expressed confidence that they will apprehend Brown, although they have not ruled out the possibility of further arrests related to this incident.

Friends of Brown have indicated that he has struggled with mental health issues, particularly post-traumatic stress disorder, stemming from his time in military service. His former acquaintances described him as being a good person when he was compliant with his medication.

The community, long viewed as safe, is now grappling with the shockwaves from this violent act. “This type of incident doesn’t happen here,” Knudsen remarked, reflecting the larger impact on Anaconda and its residents. As the investigation continues, residents are urged to remain vigilant and to reach out to law enforcement with any information that might assist in the manhunt.
