WOLVERTON, MN – A night meant for celebration quickly turned into tragedy in the quiet town of Wolverton, when a 22-year-old man was fatally shot during a New Year’s gathering, authorities said.
What began as an evening filled with laughter and camaraderie among friends at a rural residence near the North Dakota border escalated into chaos shortly before 1 a.m. According to investigators, the host of the gathering, 26-year-old Myron Johanson, had been displaying a handgun to guests throughout the night. Several partygoers reportedly became uneasy as Johanson repeatedly handled and pointed the weapon around the room.
Witnesses told authorities that at one point, Johanson approached guests with unsettling behavior, at times removing the magazine and taunting them with the question, “Do you trust me?” One attendee recalled refusing to participate in the stunt, pushing the firearm aside, and voicing his discomfort.
As the evening wore on, Johanson is said to have reinserted the magazine and chambered a round. Moments later, he allegedly directed the same question to Jorden Boehm, placing the gun under Boehm’s neck. The weapon fired, striking Boehm fatally. Paramedics responding to the residence were unable to revive him.
Boehm was remembered by his family as caring and joyful, someone always ready to lend a hand. His mother described him as a happy individual who supported those around him.
Following the shooting, Johanson allegedly expressed shock and called out for someone to dial 911. Authorities say he rendered the firearm safe before surrendering himself and waiting for deputies to arrive.
Johanson was taken into custody on charges of third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. According to officials, he remains in the Wilkin County Jail awaiting his initial court appearance, with no bond set.
Law enforcement records indicate Johanson admitted to the shooting during interviews, describing the incident as accidental. Investigators are reviewing statements from multiple witnesses as they prepare the case for prosecution.
