Missouri boy asks 911 to help as his father beats his mother to death with a hammer in the garage

SPRINGFIELD, MO – A quiet neighborhood was shattered late Wednesday night after authorities say a mother was killed with a hammer inside her own garage, while one of her children remained on the phone with emergency dispatchers, forced to listen as the violence unfolded just steps away.

The tragedy took place shortly after 11 p.m. on the outskirts of Springfield, where police responded to a chilling 911 call from a terrified juvenile. The child, whose identity has not been released due to age, pleaded for officers to come to the house, explaining that their father was attacking their mother. Throughout the call, anguished updates spilled through the phone line: the sound of blows, the absence of screams, and finally, an unbroken silence.

Investigators say 34-year-old Felipe Ayala is accused of attacking 47-year-old Suzette Flores, the mother of his three children, during a confrontation in the family’s garage. Court documents allege the brutal assault was witnessed, in part, by the children, with one describing how their father choked and struck Flores with a hammer.

As police rushed to the home, the child’s fear was palpable. “I’m very scared,” the caller reportedly told dispatch, emphasizing a deep exhaustion from ongoing domestic turmoil in the household. According to statements provided to police, Ayala had shown signs of paranoia prior to the incident, reportedly brandishing a knife and claiming threats against him.

When officers arrived at the scene just minutes after the desperate call, they found Ayala outside the home. Authorities noted fresh blood on his clothing and body, in droplets described as indicating a forceful impact. Upon gaining entry to the garage, they discovered Flores on the concrete floor, her injuries fatal and consistent with a violent attack with a blunt object.

Police recovered a hammer, its head stained with blood and tissue, mere feet from Flores’ body. The grim scene was further described in an affidavit, detailing evidence of extreme trauma.

Neighbors later recounted hearing a woman’s screams break the darkness of the night, pleading for the violence to stop. One neighbor told investigators they had observed a man pacing and appearing to strike something repeatedly in the open garage, the rhythmic motion strongly matching the use of a hammer.

The length of the attack stunned witnesses, with one neighbor estimating the assault lasted at least 15 minutes before the garage door was shut. That same neighbor was able to identify Ayala as the person they saw in the garage.

Ayala was arrested at the scene and is now facing charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action. He remains in custody without bond, awaiting court proceedings.

Three children were reportedly inside the home during the killing. Flores is remembered by loved ones as a devoted mother who wanted nothing more than safety and happiness for her children. An online fundraiser supporting her sons describes a family now confronting a devastating future without their mother.

While the shockwaves of the violent act still echo through the community, police continue to piece together the events leading up to the tragedy. No motive has yet been officially released, but authorities describe a history of domestic disputes within the household.
