Birmingham, AL — A tragic series of shootings in Birmingham, Alabama, over the past weekend claimed the lives of at least seven individuals, including a young child, and left several others wounded, according to local authorities. The violence spread across different locations in the city, including outside a nightclub and a birthday celebration inside another venue, escalating concerns about gun violence in the community.
Authorities responded late Saturday night to the initial reports of gunfire outside a nightclub. Officers discovered multiple victims at the scene, where one man, identified as Stevie McGhee, 39, was pronounced dead nearby. Further investigations inside the nightclub uncovered the bodies of two women, Markeisha Gettings, 42, and Angela Weatherspoon, 56.
The situation worsened when shots were fired from a vehicle into the same nightclub, which was hosting a birthday party at the time. The drive-by shooting led to additional casualties, including the death of Lerandus Anderson, 24, who later succumbed to his injuries at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital. In total, Birmingham Police confirmed that ten individuals were transported to the hospital, either by emergency services or private vehicles, following the incident.
The violence from the night prior continued into the following day with a separate horrifying incident. A car accident reported in the late afternoon led to the grim discovery of a family shot inside a vehicle. The victims, Eric Ashley Jr., 28, Arkia Berry, 28, and Landon Brooks, 5, were all declared dead at the scene. This event seemed unrelated to the nightclub shootings but contributed to a weekend marred by deadly gun violence.
Scott Thurmond, chief of the Birmingham Police Department, expressed his devastation over the events. “This is probably the most tragic day in my time with the Birmingham Police Department,” said Thurmond, emphasizing the full commitment of the department’s resources towards solving these cases.
In response to the incidents, Mayor Randall Woodfin expressed his condolences and outrage, urging swift action against the perpetrators. “A lot of innocent people were shot and killed yesterday, many others were wounded,” Woodfin stated. He also encouraged the community to assist in the investigation by providing any pertinent information to authorities and stressed that the shooters should find no shelter in the community.
Federal law enforcement has stepped in to assist with the ongoing investigations as local officials seek to address the broader issue of gun violence which continues to plague the city and broader region.
