Murder-Suicide Shakes San Antonio Family: Victim’s Daughters Recall a ‘Ray of Sunshine’ Amidst Heartbreak

SAN ANTONIO – A tragic incident has left a family mourning after a woman was fatally injured in what authorities have described as an attempted murder-suicide. The victim, identified as 42-year-old Valeen Tellez, was pronounced dead earlier this week, prompting an investigation that has uncovered shocking details about her relationship with the suspected shooter.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Tellez’s death a homicide, leading to the arrest of 50-year-old Jose Meza. Family members were devastated to learn that Meza, who had been in a two-year relationship with Valeen, was known to them. “Everyone in our family knew him,” said Valeen’s daughter, Ashlyn Tellez. She expressed disbelief over how someone they trusted could turn so violent. “He told us he was divorced and was welcomed in our home.”

On the day of the incident, police responded to a call about an attempted suicide at a hotel on South Laredo Street. According to an arrest affidavit, Meza’s wife was the one to place the call, indicating that she was already present in the room when officers arrived. She reportedly found Meza with a self-inflicted gunshot wound while Valeen was discovered critically injured.

Details from the affidavit reveal a grim scene: Valeen had sustained a severe neck injury and was found lying in a pool of blood. Ashlyn described her mother as a vibrant person who had touched many lives. “She was just that little ray of sunshine,” she said, highlighting the deep impact of their loss on the family.

Amber Tellez, Valeen’s other daughter, remarked that the family had not been aware of any threats made against their mother prior to this incident. However, Ashlyn mentioned that the situation was more complex than it appeared. Investigators disclosed that the relationship between Valeen and Meza was complicated, with claims of an affair disclosed by Meza’s wife, along with indications that Meza had been battling substance abuse.

Among the evidence collected was a note allegedly written by Meza, expressing regret and confusion about his actions. Family members noted that he had been using drugs before the tragic events unfolded, casting doubt on the clarity of his mental state during their relationship.

“Every day is a challenge,” Ashlyn shared as she reflected on the family’s struggle to cope with the loss. “We just have to keep moving forward. That’s all we can do.” As the family navigates their grief, they are also organizing a fundraiser to cover the funeral expenses for their beloved mother.

Meza, who was hospitalized following the incident, currently faces a $250,000 bond for his charges and remains in custody. The Tellez family hopes to honor Valeen’s memory while seeking justice for what they have described as an unimaginable betrayal.
