Honolulu, Hawaii – Tragedy struck a quiet residential neighborhood in Honolulu, Hawaii, as five people, including three children, were found dead in a suspected murder-suicide on Sunday morning. Police authorities reported that a father is believed to have fatally stabbed his wife and their children before taking his own life in their home in Manoa.
The gruesome discovery of the bodies, along with a recovered knife, marked one of the deadliest incidents in Honolulu in nearly 25 years. The victims included a mother and children aged 17, 12, and 10. Authorities found all the deceased individuals at the scene in Manoa, sending shockwaves through the community.
During a later press conference, HPD Lt. Deena Thoemmes shared, “Based on the evidence found at the scene and the investigation thus far, it appears the adult male killed the female and the juveniles with the knife that was recovered at the scene.” The lieutenant also revealed that witnesses reported an argument in the home early that morning, leading to the initiation of multiple murder investigations.
Locals in Manoa expressed deep concern and shock over the tragic incident, highlighting the peaceful nature of their neighborhood. Neighbor Aime Wakai shared with KHON2, “It’s concerning, neighbors are kind of scared, usually we don’t have a lot of crime around here. It’s real quiet, so everyone wants to be safe.” Another neighbor, Hiro Izumo, described the family as typically festive and involved in the community.
Despite the unsettling nature of the incident, HPD Chief Joe Logan assured the public that the murders did not appear to be a random act, indicating that the motive was under investigation.
