NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Metro Nashville Police Department has released a comprehensive report on the tragic shooting at The Covenant School that occurred on March 27, 2023, shedding light on the harrowing details and the timeline of events that led to the deaths of three adults and three children.
The violent episode at the private Nashville school began when the shooter, identified as Audrey Hale, heavily armed, arrived at the school premises. Before the attack, Hale prepared meticulously, leaving their residence armed with several firearms and ammunition, as contained in a large duffle bag and a tactical vest.
The report chronicles Hale’s movements starting from their home in Nashville, to a local gun shop where they equipped themselves with tactical gear, and then to the school’s parking lot where they donned this gear and armed themselves with multiple weapons. The weapons included a LeadStar Grunt-15 AR pistol, a KelTec Sub 2000 carbine, and a Smith & Wesson M&P Shield 2.0 pistol.
At approximately 10:09 a.m., Hale entered the school by breaking through the glass doors and began their assault. Among the first to encounter Hale’s rampage were school custodian Mike Hill, who was in the midst of his workday. Hill was fatally injured trying to escape from the shooter.
As Hale progressed through the school, a fired smoke alarm prompted an evacuation confusion, which led students and staff into Hale’s path. Among them were third-grade students Evelyn Dieckhaus, Hallie Scruggs, and William Kinney, who were tragically killed alongside Cynthia Peak, a visiting substitute teacher.
The school’s principal, Katherine Koonce, also fell victim to Hale’s attack. Unaware of the shooter’s presence, she was fatally shot as she attempted to understand the cause of the triggered alarms. Her death signaled to other staff the presence of an active threat, leading to a rapid security response inside the building.
