New Hampshire woman stabbed to death by habitual offender boyfriend

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, NH – In a courtroom filled with emotion, the children of Laurie MacLellan emphatically expressed their desire for Robert Eastman, the man who has admitted to killing her, to remain behind bars indefinitely.

On Monday, Eastman, 56, stood before the court in Hillsborough County, pleading guilty to the brutal killing of MacLellan, who was 59 at the time of her death. The plea detailed how she was stabbed 24 times, an act of violence that came at the hands of someone she once had a turbulent relationship with.

During the proceedings, Nicole MacLellan, Laurie’s daughter, made a fervent plea. “May you rot in prison and never see daylight ever again,” she declared, her words echoing the weight of loss borne by her family.

Brandon MacLellan, Laurie’s son, echoed his sister’s sentiments, painting Eastman as a “foul, disgusting” individual. “The day she was cowardly taken by Robert will forever burn in our minds,” he said, underscoring the profound impact his mother’s murder has had on their lives.

Eastman’s sentencing saw him receive a term of 30 years to life. While he retains the possibility of earlier release, contingent upon good behavior, a suspended sentence of up to seven years for charges of evidence tampering and habitual criminal conduct looms over him for a decade post-release.

In court, Eastman’s attorney read a statement on his behalf, where Eastman professed a haunting love for Laurie MacLellan. “I hope each of you in some way can find some comfort knowing that I am haunted by this every day,” the letter said. Despite his acknowledgment of wrongdoing, the sentiment offered little solace to those in mourning.

State Attorney General John M. Formella spoke on the case, emphasizing the message it sends regarding violent crime in New Hampshire. “Today’s guilty plea and sentence send a strong message that violent crime will not be tolerated,” he stated, aiming to underscore the state’s stance on justice and accountability.

While the family of Laurie MacLellan can’t erase the day they lost her, the legal resolution brings a measure of closure. The trial and its outcome reflect a community striving to uphold justice while grappling with the unimaginable pain wrought by domestic violence.
