FARMINGTON, NM – A New Mexico woman who initially claimed her husband died of a self-inflicted stab wound is now facing charges of murder in connection with his death following an extensive investigation by local police.
Heather Fernandez-Hoefer, 51, was charged on April 1 with second-degree murder in the death of her husband, Robert Hoefer, 49, more than two years after reporting him deceased under suspicious circumstances.
According to the Farmington Police Department, the investigation into Robert Hoefer’s November 2020 death revealed inconsistencies in Fernandez-Hoefer’s statements. On the night of her husband’s death, Fernandez-Hoefer had dialed 911, allegedly stating she discovered him unresponsive. Initially, she purported that her husband had fatally stabbed himself, a story she maintained during the initial police interviews.
However, as the investigation deepened, Fernandez-Hoefer’s narrative faltered due to discrepancies discovered in her multiple accounts. While she insisted that the incident occurred in their home’s computer room as she was elsewhere, evidence suggested otherwise. Authorities noted that bloodstains were predominantly found in the bedroom, contradicting her claims of the events that purportedly took place in another part of the house.
Further complicating her account, forensic evidence did not align with her version of events. Investigators pointed out a lack of physical evidence in the computer room and found a towel with minimal blood, with most of the blood concentrated on the couple’s bed. This blood pattern analysis, along with a lack of corroborating evidence for her timeline, raised doubts about her credibility.
The affidavit against Fernandez-Hoefer also mentions communication and relationship issues. Cell phone records indicated disputes over finances and previous relationships, possibly pointing to ongoing marital strife. Additionally, a neighbor reportedly overheard a heated argument involving a man and a woman shortly before the time authorities believe Robert Hoefer died.
On April 2, Fernandez-Hoefer surrendered to authorities and was detained at the San Juan County Adult Detention Center. Besides the murder charge, she faces allegations of tampering with evidence. She was released on bond pending further legal proceedings.
The Farmington Police Department’s sustained inquiry into the case highlights the complex nature of domestic investigations, where findings must be meticulously pieced together to uncover the truth. As Fernandez-Hoefer awaits trial, questions surrounding Robert Hoefer’s death remain, captivating public attention on the unfolding legal process.
