Oklahoma children forced to clean up blood and gore after watching father slowly beat mom to death for two days

SPENCER, OK – A Spencer man was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole this week after admitting to killing his wife in the presence of their three children, using a series of objects over two days, and then forcing the children to help conceal the violence.

Authorities said Joshua Christian Brown, 39, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the death of his wife, Shawntae Lynn Brown, following a horrific chain of events in September 2020. Investigators described a chilling scene inside the family’s home northeast of Oklahoma City, where the body of Shawntae, 34, was discovered following a pre-dawn emergency call.

Responders arrived just before 2 a.m. on September 30, 2020, finding Shawntae’s lifeless body inside a bathroom. Her husband and their three children—then ages 7, 14, and 15—were also present at the scene. Authorities reported that the victim’s body bore extensive bruises, cuts, and injuries, evidence of what officials characterized as a prolonged and brutal beating.

An affidavit later detailed the severity of the assault, stating Shawntae suffered repeated blows with a belt, a shoe, a flagpole, and a handgun. The violence reportedly unfolded with the children nearby, and according to testimony, at least one child witnessed the attack firsthand.

Law enforcement officials said Brown confessed to authorities, saying he “went too far” during a fight with his wife. After beating and strangling her over a two-day period, he instructed the children not to speak to anyone about what had happened and made them clean up blood and other evidence from the crime scene.

Forensic investigators noted the home’s interior made the magnitude of the crime immediately apparent. Officials called the scene “gruesome” and described the emotional toll the experience had likely taken on the children, who were present during much of the violence.

Records show the 14-year-old son told investigators he saw his father use multiple items—including a handgun, shoe, belt, and flagpole—as weapons during the course of the beating. Authorities said the victim was likely dead when emergency personnel arrived, given the condition in which she was found.

The case prompted a significant response from child welfare services, who provided immediate support and intervention for the three children. Authorities stated that Brown’s actions deprived the children not only of their mother but also of any sense of safety in their own home.

Brown’s guilty plea this week avoided the need for a lengthy trial, and a judge ordered he serve life in prison without the possibility of parole. The court cited the severity of the crime and the lingering trauma inflicted on the surviving children.

Officials emphasized the need for ongoing support for the children, whose lives were forever altered by the tragedy. The Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office said it was one of the most disturbing cases local investigators had faced in recent years.
