SHAWNEE, OK – A woman is recovering after authorities say a former co-worker, obsessed with her, stabbed her repeatedly outside her rural Oklahoma home early Saturday morning.
According to officials, the 18-year-old victim was attacked just after 1 a.m. as she returned home, pausing briefly on her porch. Without warning, a masked assailant confronted her, stabbing her at least 14 times in the neck and wrist while apologizing throughout the assault.
The commotion jolted the woman’s family awake. Her brother, hearing her screams, rushed to her aid and was also stabbed as he intervened in the struggle. His presence and attempt to fight off the attacker caused the suspect to flee the scene before sheriff’s deputies arrived. Both victims received immediate medical attention; the woman was listed in critical but stable condition, while her brother’s injuries were described as minor.
Investigators quickly focused on 24-year-old Ronaldo Zavala, who had previously worked with the woman at a local movie theater. Authorities allege Zavala developed an unhealthy obsession with his former colleague, which escalated after she rejected his advances and reported his behavior to management. Following her complaint, Zavala was terminated from his job.
Evidence recovered at the scene, along with details of Zavala’s prior behavior, led authorities to issue a warrant for his arrest. Officials say Zavala’s fixation continued even after his dismissal. In the weeks leading up to the attack, he reportedly sent the woman unsolicited gifts and food deliveries in an attempt to force contact.
According to law enforcement, the attack appeared meticulously planned. Investigators believe Zavala waited outside the residence, concealed and masked, until the woman arrived home. The sheriff’s office also noted that Zavala’s prolonged harassment had made the victim increasingly anxious prior to the incident.
Neighbors in the area expressed shock after learning of the attack, describing the community as generally peaceful and close-knit. The victim’s mother also witnessed the terrifying incident unfold, further traumatizing the family.
Authorities have charged Zavala with aggravated assault and battery, assault and battery while masked or disguised, and domestic assault and battery with a deadly weapon. He was booked into the Pottawatomie County jail, where he awaits further legal proceedings.
Detectives praised the woman’s brother for his quick action during the attack, crediting him with helping to save her life. The investigation remains ongoing as officials gather additional evidence and prepare the case for prosecution.
